Walter Glogowski is a retired high school teacher who taught physics, astronomy, and programming for 22 years. Walter was also involved extensively in astronomy outreach acting as a NASA Educator Ambassador for the Fermi space telescope which studies gamma-ray energy sources from space. Walter is the past president of the Chicago Astronomical Society, the country’s oldest amateur astronomy society. Since Walter’s retirement, he has established an educational consulting service working with area high schools that wish to establish Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs. He directly works with science and mathematics departments at those schools helping the teachers bring STEM teaching techniques into their classrooms. Walter is an avid amateur astronomer and has a home observatory where he observes variable stars and takes pretty pictures of night sky objects. Walter also enjoys woodworking and gardening with his wife.
1) I am a retired high school science teacher who taught astronomy, physics, and programming
2) In 2000 I participated in the NOAO RBSE program in Tuscon AZ and it permanently changed the way I approached teaching science
3) In 2003 I became a NASA educational ambassador for the Fermi Space Telescope formerly known as the GLAST mission and I participated in astronomy training at Sonoma State University during the summer. I routinely gave presentations representing the mission at NSTA conferences
4) In 2005 two of my astronomy students and I submitted a telescope proposal and were granted time through the NOAO for a three-night observation run at Kitt Peak Observatory on the 0.9-meter WYIN telescope. Katy Garmany was our mentor for the run
5) I am the past president of the Chicago Astronomical Society ... one of many
6) I am an avid amateur astronomer and participate in the AAVSO exoplanet program and take pretty pictures with my home observatory.
