Douglas Arion is Prof. of Physics and Astronomy at Carthage College, founded the Griffin Observatory, and was a co-founder of the Galileoscope program for IYA2009 and IYL2015. A member of the LPRISD committee of the AAS, and a Life Member of the International Dark Sky Association, he promotes dark skies awareness through the Mountains of Stars public science education program which aims to create environmental understanding from a cosmic perspective.
I direct a large public outreach and education program (Mountains of Stars) whose aim is 'environmental awareness from a cosmic perspective', that has reached nearly 60,000 public participants since inception in 2012, and trains undergraduate science students, nature educators, outdoors guides, and others in science communication skills. The partnership has included since the Appalachian Mountain Club, the oldest outdoor conservation, education, and recreation organization in the United States, as well as four other colleges and universities. (Dartmouth College, Smith College, Stony Brook Univ., and Carthage College). Core to our environmental mission is dark skies awareness and protection, which includes demonstrations, presentations, and workshops on` a daily basis throughout the program. . Expanding in 2019 to include four new partners - U. of Oregon, Indiana Univ.-Purdue U.-Indianapolis, U. of Vermont, and U. of Texas-Austin, Mountains of Stars will reach 100,000 people.
